Abstract

In the digital world of the 21st century, a company that wants to stand out in its industry must propose and deploy new technological innovations. A company at the heart of technological innovation is all the more successful if it excels in knowledge management. For an industrial company, it is above all a question of better understanding the interactions between individual and organizational (internal) knowledge and the innovation process. The innovation process in an industrial company was previously considered as linear; it is only recently that the innovation process in a company is considered as collaborative and iterative. Very few studies in the literature have attempted to model the role of the individual in the innovation process of an industrial company. It is therefore from this new conceptual framework of the innovation process as well as a consistent state of the art on the role of the intellectual capital of a company in the innovation process that we build through an exploratory study 3 models that involve the human capital of employees and the innovation potential of the industrial company. The objective of this dissertation is then to identify the innovation potential of the Organizational Capital (OC) of an industrial firm from the Human Capital (HC) of its employees. This exploratory study is one of the first in the literature to implement knowledge extraction learning methods from data, in order to propose a support mechanism tool for the innovation process of industrial companies with respect to the Human Capital of its internal workforce. To do this, we conduct an exploratory study on a sample of data from CAE Inc, a Canadian-based company that operates in the aeronautics and health industrial sectors. On the one hand, we collect the Human Capital data of the employees from the LinkedIn data source with respect to data confidentiality and personal data, and on the other hand we collect the data of the innovation potential of the company with the patent data of CAE Inc. from the Patseer platform. We then obtain a total sample of 493 individuals (employees) from the company CAE Inc. During this exploratory study, we develop a data harvesting tool that allows the automation of the collection and processing of Human Capital data. In order to achieve the objective of this exploratory study, the data analysis methods that are implemented are association rules, decision trees and a classification algorithm. The analyses carried out lead to the construction of a descriptor named innovation potential which allows the identification of 5 classes of innovation tendencies for each employee. Thus, the results of the analyses are innovative in identifying the link between the dimensions of know-how, of the development of the employees' Human Capital and the innovation potential of the Organizational Capital of the industrial company through the publication of patents. Nevertheless, the exploratory study has several limitations which include the direct use of these results by the company because the innovation potentials obtained for the employees are generic and do not present specificities of projects or activities at the team level. In addition, the Human Capital data comes from the LinkedIn professional network, this data may have a non-conformity and social desirability bias. However, the results obtained from this model building and analysis suggest that with the use of a model enriched with additional indicators on other dimensions of Human Capital, access to other indicators for innovation potential, and a sample with more individuals it would surely be possible to build a finer modeling of the identification of the innovation potential of the Organizational Capital of an industrial company specific to a team or a project from Human Capital.
