Abstract

Tailored Fiber Placement (TFP) is a recent fabrication technique for producing preforms with complex geometries and oriented properties. However, since this technology uses sewing as a method of fixing fibers, a distortion is induced in the fiber path. The mechanical properties of the composite designed using such preforms are therefore influenced by different manufacturing parameters related to sewing such as the thread diameter and the pitch and spacing of the stitch. Some work has been done on the simulation of parts manufactured by TFP. Approaches based on penalization and compensation of the curvature were used in order to obtain the properties. However, these curvature compensation models only took into account the orientation in a single plane and no model incorporated the sewing thread. The main objective of this thesis is to develop a simulation tool to obtain the elastic properties of composite materials manufactured by technical embroidery. At first, the different properties necessary for the simulation of the material are determined. Then, a characterization of the targeted properties is carried out on different samples using microscopies and micro-tomography. A variation of the reinforcement through-the-thickness volume ratio of the samples with a decrease of 10% in the first reinforcement layer compared to the overall volume ratio was observed. A deviation of the reinforcing fiber caused by the insertion of the sewing thread in the order of 6 ° in the plane and 3 ° out-of-plane was measured. In a second step, a mean-field homogenization model is implemented in MATLAB to simulate different preform configurations. The model developed uses a multi-step homogenization strategy. Orientation compensation for the reinforcing fibers as well as the sewing thread is implemented via decomposition of the representative elementary volume (VER) and rotation of the properties along a guide curve. Finally, the results obtained by the mean-field model are compared to modulus tensile tests to verify their validity. Six configurations are compared to simulations obtained using the model and showed a good prediction within an 8.5% error. A second validation was performed with a simplified finite element model with an embedded elements method. The results obtained seem to be consistent and demonstrate a good prediction of the model. However, limitations have not allowed to ensure a validation on all the terms of the tensor.
