Abstract

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is one of the major liability encountered worldwide for the mining sector. This phenomenon result from the oxidation of sulfide minerals contained in mine wastes when exposed to air and water. In arid and semiarid climates, AMD can be controlled by reducing water infiltration. In fact, among the available techniques, the use of alternative cover systems store-and-release (SR) is probably the best approach considering technical and economic parameters. These covers are designed with materials having specific hydrogeological properties allowing them to store water from rainfall in wet seasons until it can be subsequently removed by evaporation (or evapotranspiration) in dry seasons.
