Abstract

Mine waste management still remains an important issue in the mining industry. The waste rock is mined rock with no viable economic value to justify processing, and is usually placed in stacks called waste rock piles. Waste rock piles are often placed on the surface and become part of the regional water system. In the case of waste rock piles, the production of acid mine drainage [AMD] and contaminated neutral mine drainage [CND] are the main issues. To improve methods of managing waste rock piles, it is important to observe and scientifically understand the hydrogeological behavior of piles under different configurations.
