Abstract

Runoff from urban areas are major sources of pollution of the receiving water bodies. That is why municipalities and environmentally friendly private companies are trying to reduce their environmental impacts by promoting storm water best management practices (BMPs). These practices are in place to meet three main objectives. Firstly, the runo volume to be treated by waste water treatment plants must be reduced. Secondly, peak ows during heavy rains must be mitigated to prevent over ows at waste water treatment plants. Thirdly, the quality of stormwater should be improved at the source to decrease pollutant loads ischarged into watercourses. In 2009, the Montreal consulting rm Vinci Consultants developed a bioretention system, a rain garden, on a car park located in Longueuil, Quebec, Canada. From November 2012 to February 2014, a two-phase study was conducted to monitor eld performance of the rain garden relative to the previous three objectives during the Quebec winter. Moreover, in 2005 the Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal is equipped with a new building on which it was built a vegetated roof, also called green roof. This green roof was to meet the rst two goals on the amount of stormwater runo. The aim of this project is to achieve the experimental results of both green structures and evaluate their performance in winter.
