Abstract

The dynamic response of tailings from hard rock was studied using cyclic triaxial testing using a range of isotropic and anisotropic (K0=0.4) confining stresses varying from 100 kPa to 400 kPa, CSR values varying from 0.075 to 0.17 and loading frequencies of 0.2, 1.0 and 2.0 Hz. The sample preparation method developed by Poncelet (2012) was used to simulate hydraulic deposition and to ensure saturation of specimens without the use back-pressure. Analysis of the results indicates that the cyclic resistance increased with increasing confining stress for isotropic consolidation. However, the cyclic resistance decreased slightly with increasing confining stress for anisotropic consolidation. The cyclic resistance was slightly affected by anisotropic consolidation but unaffected by the loading frequency.
