Abstract
The research presented in this thesis deals with chevron-type eccentrically braced frames (EBF), with long links. Over the past forty years, the EBF has proved to be an effective structural system to resist seismic loading. In this system, the energy dissipation is achieved through the plastic deformation of the link. Because the link is the most important element of the system, many previous studies have focused on its length, weight, geometry, the type of profile used, the use of stiffeners, the intrusion of holes, etc.. In contrast, there are few studies examining the overall response of eccentrically braced frame. In addition, previous studies have shown that the short link can undergo larger inelastic deformations, and thus increase the dissipation of the seismic energy. However, from the architectural point of view, the EBF with long links have their advantages related mostly to geometrical arrangements. Therefore the main objective of this project is to explore the seismic behaviour of long links and the overall response of the structure. Long links yield predominantly in flexure, the yielding in flexure dominates, whereas yielding in shear characterise seismic response of short link.
