Abstract

The phase transition between the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states, occurring at the Curie temperature TC, of samples composed of MnP nanoaggregates has been studied. It has been shown previously that MnP magnetic nanoaggregates embedded in GaP semiconductive epilayers (GaP:MnP) present a remanent magnetization above the Curie temperature of bulk MnP, generally accepted as 291 K. The reason for this increase, resulting in a shift toward higher temperatures in the spontaneous magnetization curve, is however not well understood. A range of samples presenting a certain distribution of strain induced by the matrix and of size of the aggregates were produced for the study of these effects on TC: 1) GaP:MnP grown at 600, 650 and 700◦C, 2) polycrystalline MnP thin layers deposited at 550, 600, 650 and 700 ◦C on GaP(001) substrates, 3) a polycrystalline MnP thin layer grown at 600◦C on glass, 4) laser ablated MnP nanoaggregates in a polystyrene matrix (Ps:MnP) and 5) monocrystalline bulk MnP kindly lent by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University. The bulk MnP was used as a reference during the Curie temperature determination. Ps:MnP was produced by femtosecond laser ablations with powers of 100, 160, 175 and 200 mW from MnP films grown on glass, and at 200 mW from bulk MnP, resulting in different size and form distributions. The geometry, composition, crystalline structure and aggregate size distribution of these novel materials were analyzed by XRD, SEM, TEM and EDS. The Curie temperatures of the samples were obtained from the systematic application of five different experimental methods. The first, probably the simplest and most quoted in the research literature, is based on the inflection point in the curve of the magnetization in an applied field vs temperature occurring approximately at TC. The second is Smith's method which determines the spontaneous magnetization from isothermical magnetization curves with the magnetic field applied in the easy axis direction. The spontaneous magnetization is then defined by the point where the curve branches off the initial linear demagnetization slope caused by the movement of the domains walls. The curve of the spontaneous magnetization as a function of the sample temperature, theoretically falling abruptly at TC for bulk materials, is then used to find the phase transition. The third, Arrott's method, is based on an expansion of the magnetization as a function of the internal field in the vicinity of TC. The predicted linear relationship between the third power of the magnetization as a function of the field will pass through the origin for the isotherm corresponding to TC. The fourth one is based on the easy axis fallback remanence method, a new way to determine the effective spontaneous magnetization of monodomain samples. The last uses from the magnetocaloric effect, in which a local extremum of entropy change at the transition temperature is expected for a
