Abstract

This thesis lies within the general perspective aiming to incorporate sustainability principles into transportation planning practices, more precisely with respect to social issues regarding individual mobility. The approach developed here is based on the concept of accessibility, which combines both transport and land-use systems, helping grasp a better understanding of spatial phenomena. According to several authors, accessibility represents the main benefit associated with a transport system. This thesis focuses on public transport networks and local amenities, since they have both been shown to be highly important to vulnerable individuals in the context of daily life, especially in the context of sprawl and car dependency. The underlying hypothesis of this work stipulates that the supply of public transport should favor individuals who show a high vulnerability towards mobility. This lies in concordance with the literature on transport and social exclusion, which has highlighted that a lack of accessibility among these population groups increases their odds of experiencing difficulties reaching activities, thus increasing their risk of being socially excluded.
