Abstract

The internal erosion of granular soils is defined as the migration of fine particles under waterflows that changes the hydraulic and mechanical characteristics of the soil (suffusion). Hydraulic structures may be in danger if erosion and loading persist over time and the damages may be irreversible. Thus, many studies were conducted to improve the behavior of potentially unstable soils and to prevent this phenomenon. The prevention is achieved either by zoning filters, including granular or synthetic filters, or by chemical stabilization using lime treatment or chemical grouting. Nevertheless, these solutions must be design during the conception phase and there is no nonintrusive solution that can be applied to deficient or absent filtering system. Moreover, most chemical treatments need heavy machinery or chemical products that lead to high energy consumption or increase the production of chemical reactants.
