Abstract
Graphitization and carbonization are critically important processes in the field of carbon science. Formally, graphitization is here defined as the high temperature transformation of initially non-graphitic carbons to graphitic carbons. Carbonization is defined as the lower temperature transformation of initially non-graphitic carbon to carbon materials of greater structural order (but still not graphitic per se). A graphitic carbon is defined here as a graphenic carbon where the majority of the graphene planes are aligned in the ABA Bernal stacking. Graphenic carbons are any carbon materials whose dominant structural component is the graphene layer. Industrial graphenic carbons (e.g. nuclear graphite moderators, met-allurgical electrodes) are typically obtained from the heat treatment of rudimentary carbons (e.g. biomass, petroleum residues). The heat treatment process of a rudimentary carbon gen-erally results in the formation of a graphenic carbon as the thermodynamic system always aims to irreversibly approach (as much as possible) the perfect graphite structure if suÿ-cient thermal energy is available and other structural prerequisites are met. Perfect graphite is defined here as a graphitic carbon whose average stacking of the layers is perfect (i.e. Bernal stacking).
