Abstract

DOE Reference buildings consider two diverse time periods: pre-1980 and 1980-2004. However, within each, there is significant heterogeneity. Retrofit assessment requires a more granular set of archetypes. This paper presents a five-step methodology to develop such models for ASHRAE CZ5 commercial and multi-unit residential buildings: 1) architectural style analysis; 2) representative building identification; 3) data collection to characterize the envelope assembly of each; 4) clustering of buildings with common envelopes; and 5) development of EnergyPlus inputs for each cluster. The resultant paper both enhances ASHRAE CZ5 archetypes and provides a replicable approach to enhance existing building archetypes.
